Tropical rainforests are home to approximately 40-75% of the world’s animal and plant species, thousands of which may yet be undiscovered. These habitats are also home to over 25% of the world’s natural medicines, and are consequential to the regulation of oxygen production in our atmosphere. The present rate of deforestation, if unchecked, will result in the destruction of Indonesia’s rainforests within the next 10 years. Native Indonesians turn to the forest to make a living by logging and poaching, but in doing so destroy that livelihood. Indonesia Culture Exploration (ICE) aims to counteract this by addressing the core issues that lead to these detrimental actions.
By buying back land to extend the borders of the rainforest, ICE will provide jobs to native Indonesians in replanting and patrolling the protected new growth forests. We also aim to create and build a global interest in the unique cultures of Indonesia, resulting in ecotourism to boost the region’s economy and provide alternative employment opportunities for its people. Land owned by ICE will also be open to private researchers who desire to learn more about this vital environment.
Here is a look at some of Indonesia's precious fauna species that will be protected under ICE.
